The Issue

Dear Kathleen Wynne,

A trillion plastic bags are used around the globe each year, each taking 1,000 years to decompose. In fact, 2 million animals die each year from ordinary plastic shopping bags. To prevent such a horrendous future, we must set the example we want to see in the world. The number of plastic bags used must be reduced.

The solution is simple & straightforward: Place a tax (or partial tax) on plastic shopping bags. Several cities, states, and countries have already done it.

Take China for example. A couple years ago, China was once the world’s worst polluters of plastic bags, called “White Pollution”. Then, in 2008, a ban was set nationwide to prohibit the production and sale of plastic bags thinner than 0.025 millimeters. Since then, there has been a dramatic 66% drop in plastic bag use, and have saved 1.6 million tonnes in oil. This is what we aim to do.

We are blessed with our beautiful planet. Now, as responsible citizens, we need to take the initiative to protect our wildlife, and our environment, by placing taxes on plastic bags. Set the example you want to see. Support a plastic bag tax in Ontario. Tell the world YOU care!
