Forgive Our OSAP Loans

Forgive Our OSAP Loans

The Issue

The 2016 budget for Ontario has been released and it is packed full with wonderful promises regarding the education sector. Low-income families no longer have to worry about the ever increasing cost of post-secondary education since it will now be offered to them for free. This is a great achievement for many people, from the low-income students, to the individuals who were considering going back to school but faced a massive cost obstacle.

The future is looking bright indeed, however, not for all. Post-secondary institutions in Ontario have just over 650,000 students enrolled full-time and about 150,000 part-time. In 2013, Post-secondary institutions in Ontario graduated approximately 200,000 students. With the average tuition cost for Ontario universities hovering around $7,500 per semester, many students are graduating with student debts in excess of $25,000.

We ask of Premier Wynne to address these students as they have been left without a voice. Why are they left with crippling debt while students now can receive that same education free of cost? We demand justice.

We demand those of us who come from qualifying low-income families have their OSAP loans forgiven, or at the very least eliminate the interest on those loans. We demand answers from our elected government.
