Heather Kelley started this petition to Governor Kate Brown and

Oregon legislation changed the definition of Aggravated Murder, without the consideration of the people. The victims and their families are now suffering as their cases are being re-evaluated at a lesser charge. My brother Brad Kelley was murdered alongside his good friend Mike Buntjer on May 6th 2019. The 2 boys that senselessly shot and killed them both were being charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Murder and 1 count of attempted Aggravated Murder for also shooting a pregnant female. These boys deserve life in prison with no possibility of parole AT THE LEAST, but even better would be putting them on death row. Brad and Mike were helping a friend, being the good men that they were, when their lives were taken because of a pathetic 23yr old getting upset about a simple heartbreak. If this is how he handles such a petty event at this age, how will he handle anything bigger in his life?? What good is he to our society? He has no business being a part of our community. And if his first legal offense is murder, what will his next offense be?? My family has gone through this before. A minimum 30yr sentence for 1st degree murder might seem like a longtime to some, it did seem like a long time to us when we went through this the first time. In 1998 2 of my brothers were murdered in Idaho, in very close to the same circumstances as this one. The legal system failed us by reducing the murderers charges, and allowing him to serve 30yrs for each of my brothers, but at the same time. Now it’s been over 21 years, and with Idaho’s laws he has gotten his time reduced for “good behavior”. He’s been up for parole multiple times, and each attempt he makes sends our family back through the memories of 1998. See, 30 years seemed like a long time, at the time. But now it’s almost up. My brothers will never get to come back to us, but the man that murdered them is about to be released back to living in the world again. I can’t even imagine 30yrs from now, watching the boys that killed Brad walking free. They don’t deserve such a privilege. We will never get our men back. Never. This change in the definition of Aggravated Murder is helping only the criminals. Only the worst of the worst murderers. Why are we helping those people?? My brothers case is not the only one affected by this. Look at any of the well known murders in this state, there are so many cases that are being re-evaluated, to go in favor of the criminal!  Men that have been convicted and sitting on death row for YEARS, are now having their sentences reduced. Think about all of them! All of those families that won’t get justice. Do your research and I know you will be as disgusted by this as I am. Please help the victims, and sign with us.
