Fishing has always been a beautiful and relaxing sport for many people. As many of you know, bow fishing, is still a legal sport in Oregon. Bow fishermen have been attacking our waters for too long. I propose that carp (Common, Koi, Mirror, etc.) Should be reclassified as a sport fish. With this single species of fish being brought from a forage to a sport classification. We, as Oregon’s fishermen, ask the leaders of Oregon’s government to step forward and ask themselves why it is OK to kill fish for fun, not sport. There are many bow fishermen who will try to tell you that carp are an invasive species; this is not true. According to the United States Department of Natural Resources, the only invasive sub species of carp is the Asian Carp. Taking large amounts of any species from its natural ecosystem could ruin the fragile environment that some species of fish need to survive.Our last and final issue that we wish to resolve is the use of spotlights on bow fishing boats. These spotlights blind and shock the fish making them easier to kill. These lights have already been BANNED by the US Coast Guard, but the enforcement of this is based state to state. We need to group together to keep our lakes safe. I ask you, citizens of Oregon, to please sign this petition, to end the terrible crime of bow fishing.
