Petition updateKassidi's Law: Support sexual assault survivorsSexual Assault Awareness Month: We need timely services to save lives

In May, Ontario recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month. My family has spent this month coming to terms with the terrible news that the maximum sentence for the man found guilty of sexually assaulting my sister will be just 18 months. Now, as Sexual Assault Awareness Month comes to an end, we want to remind our politicians that concrete action needs to be taken, to ensure no one else has to face what my sister endured.
Our federal government has committed $5.5 million to fund sexual assault crisis centres at universities, which is a positive step forward. But we believe sexual assault victims everywhere in Canada should have access to timely support, independent of their age and province. My sister took her own life after being sexually assaulted, but her heartbreaking story can save other young women by prompting our government to act. No one should have to wait four months for urgent mental health services after being sexually assaulted. No one.
The UN special rapporteur on violence against women recently said violence against women in Canada remains a "serious pervasive and systematic problem" and recommended a national action plan on violence against women. We still have to make important changes to ensure survivors of violence and sexual assault across our country have access to timely services.
I’ll continue to keep you updated on our efforts in Kassidi's memory. Right now, we need your help to raise awareness - please SHARE this petition today.
