How fitting that “Stay With Me” by SAM SMITH was playing on a Michigan radio station when I drove to Karen's advocate's home in Crystal, Michigan in March of 2016. I was there to interview Walle - one of Karen’s longest advocates - a woman entrusted with a mission by her former church pastor, Reverend Ray. The mission was to look out for Karen who did not deserve to be in prison.
I was also there to see the room where Karen would be living if she was ever released from three decades of incarceration for taking action to defend her life. We went through boxes of Karen’s belongings and letters that had not been opened in 28 years. It was so moving. A whole life packed up in boxes never to be opened. Gone. Vanished. A whole life robbed of her.
That's Walle in bright orange and videographer Peter Liex who shot some of the powerful footage of Walle and former judge Norman Lippitt that you see in these updates Karen's Facebook pages and in other social media. Walle has a had a room set up for Karen for years now.
On December 27th, 2017 that room finally had someone to sleep in it. Karen was paroled and released that day.
I will still be fighting for Karen’s sentence to be fully commuted by Governor Rick Snyder. You see, along with Karen’s December 27th parole comes four more years of checking in and reporting to parole officers. Karen will be 70 on February 3rd, 2018. She is half blind, frail and suffers from neurological tremors. I’ll be *&^%#$$ if Karen has to check in with anyone but the Lord ever again.
Thank you to all the people at www.Change.org and the almost 10,000 of you who signed and shared this petition. You are awesome, inspiring, powerful people!!!!!!!!! Keep going!!!
