New Legislature to Stop Police Brutality: The George Floyd Act of 2020

New Legislature to Stop Police Brutality: The George Floyd Act of 2020
The Issue
Police brutality has long been a part of the Black American experience since slavery. The abuse has fallen into a systemic pattern with officers rarely facing justice or appropriate consequences.
In an effort to deter these persistent and often deadly breaches of professionalism, we insist that the following statute is passed and enforced on a national level to protect American citizens from a culture of willful and intentional abuse that has been allowed to continue for far too long.
The George Floyd Act of 2020
We demand legislation that requires members of law enforcement who have been terminated or resigned while under investigation for use of excessive force be added to a national “Do Not Hire” database and banned from employment in law enforcement throughout the United States and all of its territories.
This preventative measure will ensure that officers found lacking in moral and professional character are not able to transfer and do harm in other jurisdictions. It will also serve as a deterrent for further acts of abuse going forward.
About George Floyd
George Floyd was an unarmed Black American killed while being restrained by four now-former Minneapolis police officers. Derek Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly minutes despite the man’s pleas for his life. Chauvin is currently facing second-degree murder/manslaughter charges with the remaining ex-cops charged with aiding and abetting.
The initial reluctance and delay to bring charges in George Floyd’s death sparked protests and riots across the United States and beyond.
Please join us in ensuring that this great country lives up to its promises to all.
