Stop proposed logging road through Nelson cemetery trail network!

The Issue

There is a proposed logging road flagged in the heart of the well used and loved Cemetery trail network in Uphill Nelson, associated with upcoming forestry development and the proposed Selous-Bloom initiative directly upslope of the Rail Trail.

Based on all the information myself and others have gathered in the last couple weeks it seems as though this is not a done deal and Kalesnikof Lumber, the company that will be using this road as one of several points of access to timber above the Rail Trail, is open to public feedback on the proposal. Other shareholders that will be involved in the final approval of this work include the City of Nelson, RDCK, and others.  (Edited - Wildsight is not involved in this road project)

Much time and effort has been put into building this trail network and it is used by 100's of local people daily, and many more since the pandemic. These trails are used by dog walkers, hikers, bikers, daycares, families, and people seeking relatively easy access to nature.  This small forest is also directly above the City cemetery where people go to grieve and connect with their lost loved ones, seeking peace and nature.  It is home to hundreds of plant species including the threatened Western Yew tree. Kalesnikoff claims safety for their workers as one of the main reasons this road is the best option to access this timber site. What about the safety of all these users?

These are just some of the key reasons why it is important to stop this proposed road from becoming a reality, and we need to let these shareholders know that we, the community, will not allow this to happen.
