I firmly believe the idea of allowing Grade 10 students to bypass Senior High School (SHS) is flawed. While there are undoubtedly academically advanced students ready to move to the next level, we need to remember that SHS is not solely about academics. It serves as a transition period where young people can grow, explore potential careers, and form their identity without the pressures typically associated with higher education.

When we allow students to fast-track past SHS, we deny them the chance to experience these critical developmental years. According to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, students who transition into higher education without this preparatory phase often struggle with stress and demonstrate lower levels of emotional well-being (Journal of Adolescent Health, 2017).

Moreover, recent data from UNESCO (2019) emphasized that individuals who transitioned from junior high to higher education without the experience of senior high were significantly less likely to complete their tertiary education. We need to give our children the best possible chance of success, and rushing them through this educational process does not achieve this.
