Follow up to the earlier petition, the large LMSD meeting a few days ago, and the next step regarding 1:1 school issued devices such as iPads and Chromebooks.
Thanks to the incredible support of LMSD parents, educators, and residents, more than 530 people signed our earlier petition. That support helped district leadership recognize the urgency of the issues surrounding phones, Chromebooks, and screens for children across K to 12 in LMSD.
That momentum helped lead to an extraordinary community meeting a few days ago. We truly appreciate the district for taking these concerns seriously, assembling a large panel, and making space for hundreds of community members to attend and speak. What became clear very quickly was that the concern went far beyond phones alone. For much of the meeting, parents, educators, students, and other community members raised concern after concern about educational technology in our district, including Chromebooks, iPads, screen heavy instruction, safety, distraction, privacy, and the growing role of AI in children’s academic lives.
One clear message emerged: many families want the right to opt out of 1:1 school issued devices as a routine part of daily instruction. In one grade at one elementary school alone, more than 20 families have already expressed interest in opting out, and many more parents across other schools in LMSD are now exploring the same path.
At the beginning of the meeting, the superintendent made clear that in LMSD there is no option to opt out of 1:1 school issued devices such as iPads and Chromebooks. But the energy in the room and the voices of the community made it clear that this conversation is far from over. Families are organizing, momentum is growing, and more and more people are demanding a real option for children to learn without 1:1 devices as a routine part of daily instruction.
Please read and sign this new petition if you agree with its message. Even more importantly, please share it widely with parents, educators, grandparents, and other residents across LMSD. This is a true grassroots movement, and what is happening in our district can help shape what comes next.
