Accountability for 63 MPs who voted against the banning of conversion therapy in Canada
The Issue
On June 22, 2021, the Parliament of Canada successfully passed a bill banning the use of conversion therapy. Although the vote was passed with a 163-63 split, it is unacceptable that 63 Members of Parliament are still okay with oppressing, harming, and causing irreversible trauma to 2SLGBTQ+ people through the use of conversion therapy.
Conservative members of parliament have been using procedural delay tactics in an attempt to stop votes from happening on many important legislations, such as the ban on conversion therapy. Numerous conservative MPs as well as independent MP Derek Sloan voted against the legislation. Although the current conservative part leader Erin O’Toole claims to be pro-choice and supportive of LGBTQ people and their rights, it’s clear that a vast majority of the Conservative party itself feel differently.
2SLGBTQ+ rights are human rights. We are people, we are born this way, and we cannot let the 63 MPs who are supposed to represent us in the House of Commons see us as anything other than equals.
The 63 MPs who voted against the bill are:
Tom Kmiec
Damien Kurek
Stephanie Kusie
Chris Lewis
Dane Lloyd
Ben Lobb
Earl Dreeshen
