Dear Supporter,
You are one of 50,289 supporters calling for justice for the Whitewebbs Oak. Despite this, and our ongoing efforts, the Metropolitan Police have not yet investigated the £1m criminal damage to our ancient oak. Instead they continue to accept Mitchells & Butlers’ bogus story.
Worse still, Deputy London Mayor Jules Pipe has just approved Spurs’ destruction of 207 more trees (including mature and veterans) and the concreting of 16 hectares of wildlife-rich public space in Whitewebbs Park.
We remain committed to preventing the takeover of our park and dedicated to getting justice for the Whitewebbs Oak. The fight goes on.
Last week two men received unprecedented prison sentences for the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree. In that case all the details have been exposed thanks to a thorough police investigation that tracked mobile phone calls and DNA tested chainsaw residues.
It seems, however, that there is one law for ordinary people and no law for big corporations. Neither the Metropolitan Police nor Michells & Butlers will say who felled the Whitewebbs Oak, or who concocted the claim that the tree was dead and dangerous. In their statements about the case, the police inexplicably do not mention the crime that was reported to them by Enfield Council, i.e. criminal damage. An identical crime to the (successfully prosecuted) Sycamore Gap tree felling. It is very simple. The people who felled the tree did not own it. The owners were not informed and did not consent. That is criminal damage.
We do not know if the police refusal to investigate has anything to do with Spurs’ controlling interest in Mitchells & Butlers, Spurs’ option to buy the Toby Carvery lease, their long standing and ongoing accumulation of Green Belt land in north Enfield, or the fact the club chairman’s son sits on M&B’s board of directors.
What we do know is that this ancient tree was not dead or dangerous. It stood for around 500 years and contained internationally important irreplaceable habitat. It was the most valuable tree on the site and it was cut down by tree surgeons wearing masks and using an unmarked vehicle. Spurs are poised to take control of the ancient woodland where the tree stood. One of the reasons Spurs were granted planning permission was their promise to improve the condition of the woodland as part of their Biodiversity Net Gain obligations!
