WFTV is reporting that the Orange County Sheriff’s Office is now assisting in an animal‑welfare investigation into the deaths of 55 sloths connected to Sloth World Orlando. This is the first time a law‑enforcement agency has publicly confirmed involvement. This matters because FWC previously said they found “no criminal wrongdoing.” Now lawmakers are saying current laws do allow for criminal charges, and OCSO stepping in means this is no longer just an internal agency review — it’s a real investigation. What we learned today: - FWC inspected Sloth World five times. - The first inspection in August 2025 documented 31 sloths dead from cold and poor conditions. - No citations were issued. - Four more inspections in March found “no violations,” even though sloth experts say the signs of stress and illness would not have been visible to non‑specialists. - The surviving 10 sloths are still in touch‑and‑go care at the Central Florida Zoo. The CEO of the zoo said it clearly: “It is unrealistic to believe that a veterinarian and laypeople who are not experienced or trained in caring for exotic animals could be prepared to properly manage the health of an animal like a sloth.” Lawmakers now believe there are multiple paths to criminal charges under current statute. They also confirmed bipartisan support for policy changes and rulemaking to prevent this from ever happening again. What this means for us: Our pressure is working. The story is not being ignored. And the push for accountability is finally gaining traction. Please keep sharing and speaking up.
