My name is Jalida Ahmed Baba, a citizen from the Western Sahara, a region in North Africa that is part of one of the 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories still awaiting a decolonisation process. I grew up admiring the courage and bravery of the Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, killed on May 11, by the Israeli army. 

Thanks to her, I got to know and deepen my knowledge of the occupation in Palestine, which I have always followed closely. She was a reference for millions of Arabs around the world and she has been brutally murdered by Israeli forces while covering the riots in Jenin refugee camp. Israeli forces shot "deliberately" and "in cold blood" at the journalist as reported by the international press despite her press identification. We cannot allow this crime to go uninvestigated, we need those responsible to be brought to justice and judged accordingly.

That is why I’m asking you to sign this petition to demand that all relevant authorities immediately launch an independent international investigation to identify those behind this brutal crime and bring them to justice as soon as possible.

As above it breaks my heart when I see this kind of murder because I feel that this could happen any day in the refugee camps where my family lives, and that is why it is urgent that we raise our voices and demand justice for Shireen Abu Aqleh. This crime CANNOT GO UNpunished and all EU countries should take action against the brutal violations of rights committed by the Israeli army against journalists and civilians.

From a very young age, thanks to the great work of Shireen Abu Aqleh, I have been able to be informed about what is considered "irrelevant" issues for many European media. Shireen's murder is a direct attack against freedom of the press and quality information about Palestine and about all the people who resist and survive in the face of occupation. 

If we allow this crime to go unpunished, we will be sending a terrible message to the world that Palestinian journalists and citizens can be killed without consequences. I still cannot believe that we will never see Shireen on screen again and I now live in even greater fear that this will happen again in Palestine or Western Sahara. However, I take solace in the thought that we can still get justice for Shireen and do all we can to prevent these crimes against freedom of the press and the Palestinian people. But for that we need your support.
