Justice for Serdar Caliskan – Demand Transparency and Accountability of a Tragic Death
The Issue
On September 30, 2023, 50-year-old Serdar Caliskan tragically lost his life during a camping trip at Mount Disappointment, north of Melbourne. His wife, Ilknur Caliskan, was charged with his murder after allegedly stabbing him in the heart. However, the charge was later dropped after experts suggested she may have been experiencing parasomnia, a sleep disorder that can involve abnormal behaviors during sleep, leading to involuntary actions.
Why This Matters
The decision to discontinue the prosecution has left many questions unanswered and has caused significant distress to Serdar's family, who feel that justice has not been served. They have expressed concerns about the lack of communication and transparency from the authorities, stating that they were not informed about the decision to drop the charges.
This case raises important issues about the legal system's handling of cases involving complex medical defenses and the need for clear communication with victims' families.
Our Demands
We call upon the Victorian legal authorities to:
We demand a coronial inquest in to this matter, also we want the law changed for sleep disorders to be used against violent crimes and the law to be called Serdar's Law.
Provide Transparency: Release detailed information about the decision-making process that led to the discontinuation of the prosecution, ensuring that the public and Serdar's family understand the rationale behind this outcome.
Review Legal Procedures: Examine the protocols for handling cases involving medical defenses like parasomnia to ensure that such defenses are thoroughly vetted and that victims' families are kept informed throughout the process.
Support the Family: Offer counseling and support services to Serdar's family, acknowledging their loss and the emotional toll of the legal proceedings.
