Justice for Richard Alexander.

Justice for Richard Alexander.
The Issue
Losing a loved one unexpectedly is a heartache that's hard to describe. Richard William Alexander was not just an amazing friend to many of us; he was a cherished teammate, a family man, father and a wonderful hardworking soul who brought light to every room he entered. Richard was always there and willing to help anyone who needed it. On an ordinary day October 03 2024 in Kelowna, BC, his life was tragically cut short, leaving us all wondering: Could this have been prevented?
Richard deserved better, and the answer is yes—a simple phone call to 911 could have saved his life. This unfortunate circumstance highlights a critical gap in how we respond to emergency situations scared or not. It's unbearable to think that such a life was lost because someone hesitated to make a call for help. This loss doesn't just impact Richard's family and children (youngest being only 5) but has sent ripples throughout our city and softball community, and surrounding areas awakening the realization that this could have happened to any of us or our loved ones.
In honour of Richard's memory, we demand accountability and changes that will ensure such tragic situations do not occur again. We need a community that looks out for one another, where no one's life hangs in the balance over an overlooked phone call or fear. It is vital that those who choose not to act in an emergency be aware of the severe consequences their inaction can have and hopefully justice will be served to those who choose not to call for help.
We propose that educational programs be implemented across Kelowna and the Okanagan to emphasize the importance of calling 911 in a moment of crisis and practicing safe drug use if you choose to do them. We call upon local leaders and emergency services to make it clear—to hesitate over a call can mean the difference between life and death.
Our community cannot afford another heartbreak like this. Let us unite to make sure Richard's story serves as a lesson for change. Sign this petition to demand justice and ensure safety protocols are strengthened in our community.
