Justice for Pets Left Behind After ICE Arrests

The Issue

Across the country, pets are being left behind after ICE arrests.

When people are suddenly detained or deported, their dogs and cats are often left with no food, no care, and no understanding of why their family never came home.

Animal rescue groups report a surge in pets suffering from neglect, abandonment, and trauma as a direct result of immigration enforcement actions.

This is not the animals’ fault.
And it is preventable.

Pets are family. When enforcement actions tear families apart without safeguards, animals suffer silently. Rescues and foster networks are stepping in, but they cannot handle this crisis alone.

We are calling on ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, and state governments to take responsibility for the harm being caused by arrests that leave pets behind.

This includes:

  • Requiring officers to ask about pets before detention
  • Coordinating with family members or local rescues
  • Funding emergency foster care and supplies
  • Preventing animals from being abandoned or euthanized

Justice is not just about people. It is about preventing unnecessary suffering for those who depend entirely on humans to survive.

No pet should be punished because their family was taken away.
