Justice for Our Children: Demand Accountability for the Neglect, Bullying, and Institutional Harm at Wildwood Elementary
Petition Introduction:

My name is Sherron Hinton. I’m a mother, an advocate, and now—unwillingly—a whistleblower. I never imagined that sending my daughter to school, trusting she would be safe, would lead to her experiencing bullying, racial targeting, sexual harassment, and school-based retaliation. This petition is not just for my daughter—it is for every child who has been harmed, ignored, or left behind by a system that was supposed to protect them.

Our story was recently reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, bringing long-overdue public attention to what we’ve been privately living through for years. But exposure alone is not enough. We need action.

Who Is Impacted?

This crisis affects our children—especially those who are vulnerable, marginalized, or simply different. My daughter is one of many who was failed by a system that was supposed to protect her. She endured bullying, racial targeting, and sexual harassment, all of which were reported and documented. Yet, instead of intervention, she was met with silence, blame, and systemic indifference.

The Chicago Sun-Times article includes documentation, timelines, and internal communications that show exactly how many opportunities the school had to intervene—and how often they failed to act. Other families have since come forward with similar stories. The impact is deep and lasting: children left feeling unsafe, unseen, and emotionally scarred in the very place they should be able to learn and grow without fear.

What Is At Stake?

If nothing changes, more children will be harmed. More families will be gaslit into silence. The culture of inaction and complicity at schools like Wildwood Elementary will continue to flourish, creating environments where abuse is tolerated and accountability is optional. But if change does happen—if we hold these institutions accountable, implement the proper training, and center student safety over politics—we can shift the trajectory for countless students. We can create school communities that are rooted in equity, safety, and transparency.

This is not just about my daughter—it’s about every child who walks into a classroom expecting to be protected and instead finds harm. The article published by Chicago Sun-Times has opened a door. Now we must walk through it—together.

Why Now?

Now is the time because the truth is no longer hidden. The documentation exists. The harm is ongoing. And the longer we wait, the more damage is done to the lives and minds of our youth. We are at a crossroads—either we choose courage and take action to correct these injustices, or we allow them to deepen in silence.

The Chicago Sun-Times did what the school system refused to do: it listened, investigated, and exposed the truth. The longer we wait, the more we send a message that our children’s pain doesn’t matter. They need protection, healing, and justice—now.

What We Are Demanding:

We are calling on Chicago Public Schools, the CPS Office of Student Protections, and the Office of the Inspector General to:

Publicly acknowledge the failures at Wildwood Elementary that resulted in ongoing harm to my daughter and others.

Initiate an independent investigation into the school’s handling of bullying, racial targeting, and sexual misconduct allegations.
Remove any staff found to have neglected their duty to protect children, including administrators who ignored or downplayed reports.
Implement mandatory racial bias, trauma-informed care, and child protection training for all CPS staff, beginning with Wildwood Elementary.
Create a community restorative process to address the racial and social harm caused to families and rebuild trust through transparency.
Provide mental health resources and academic support to children who were harmed due to these systemic failures.
