The Issue

Marquese Gunter, my beloved nephew, has been unjustly incarcerated for the past nine months as he attempted to protect himself and his mother from her abuser. Marquese is a quiet, gentle young man who is cherished by everyone who knows him. He found himself in a difficult situation and believed he was acting in the best interest of his and his mother's safety.

On that fateful day, Marquese stepped in to defend his mother from imminent danger. In doing so, he became entangled in legal proceedings that have resulted in his prolonged and unwarranted detention. This ordeal is not just a miscarriage of justice, but a deep personal tragedy for our family. We are heartbroken to see such a loving person trapped in a system that has failed to recognize his intentions and the context of his actions.

Legal scholars and human rights advocates frequently point out how the justice system can become a barrier rather than a protector for individuals who act in self-defense, especially in familial settings where emotions run high, and decisions have to be made in an instant. Marquese's situation exemplifies this kind of failure, which underscores the need for our legal systems to incorporate compassion and context in adjudicating self-defense cases.

In many instances across the nation, situations like Marquese's have been resolved more fairly by understanding the intent and circumstances. Self-defense laws are meant to safeguard individuals who find themselves in dangerous positions—not to punish them for stepping up to protect their loved ones.

We urge the applicable legal bodies to reassess Marquese Gunter Jones's case with the compassion and understanding it deserves. Let us rally together to correct this injustice. Free Marquese, who only sought to protect his mother, not jeopardize his future. Bond is 750,000, we need it reduced to where Marquese can come home NOW!
