The Issue

Lucas Mattson was just 19 years old. A University of Michigan student. An academic scholar. A civil engineering major who dreamed of graduate school and had already earned an internship back home in Juneau, Alaska. He was a son who called home every day. A friend whose kindness lit up a room. His parents describe him as “unfailingly kind” — their only child and their world.

On January 24, Lucas’ life ended after attending a fraternity party as a guest. His body was later found in Ann Arbor. An autopsy is still pending. His family is left grieving — and searching for answers.

They have publicly questioned whether alcohol was provided to underage students and whether appropriate safety measures were in place. They have asked why surveillance footage was not immediately turned over to investigators. These are serious concerns that deserve clear, transparent answers.

No family should have to wonder whether their child’s death was preventable.

This petition calls on the University of Michigan Board of Regents and Interim President Domenico Grasso to ensure a full, transparent accounting of what happened and to strengthen enforcement of campus policies that protect students from unsafe alcohol practices. It calls on Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit to thoroughly review all investigative findings and pursue accountability wherever the facts lead.

Lucas’ life mattered. His future mattered. His family deserves answers. And students across Michigan deserve to know that their safety is more important than secrecy.

Stand with Lucas’ family. Demand transparency. Demand accountability. Demand protections.
