Justice for K-9 Chase: Hold Officers Accountable When Police Dogs Die from Negligence

The Issue

K-9 Chase served the Dade County Sheriff's Office with loyalty. He was a trained police dog, a partner, a protector—and he died alone in the back of a hot patrol car after his handler allegedly failed to notice the vehicle’s cooling system had shut down.

This wasn’t an unavoidable accident. The heat alarm in the car reportedly failed, and now a dog who trusted his handler is gone.

Chase’s death should not be treated as just another internal matter. We are calling for clear and enforceable legal accountability for law enforcement officers when police dogs die due to negligence—just as there would be if a child or civilian were left to die under the same circumstances.

Right now, K-9s are honored with funerals and medals—but when they die from preventable mistakes, the consequences are often administrative at best. That has to change. These animals are not just equipment. They are living, breathing partners who deserve protection under the law.

We're demanding that Georgia establishes legal consequences for officers found responsible for the negligent deaths of police dogs, including criminal investigation and prosecution when appropriate. Without accountability, these tragic deaths will continue.

Sign to demand justice for K-9 Chase—and to ensure that no more police dogs are left to die in silence.
