The Issue

This is the original petition started on June 3, 2024 — before similar petitions were created. Thank you for supporting the first grassroots call for justice.

On June 1, 2024, beloved actor and voice of King of the Hill’s John Redcorn, Jonathan Joss, was tragically murdered outside his home in San Antonio. His husband reports the attacker used homophobic slurs before opening fire. This horrific act followed years of targeted harassment, including slurs, threats, and even the burning of their previous home.

This could happen to anyone — Jonathan deserved better. Demand justice for what clearly is a hate crime

We, the undersigned, demand that the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) formally recognize and classify the recent acts of violence and harassment as a hate crime — because that’s exactly what it is.

This is not just a case of random violence. This is a targeted, escalating pattern of hate. Repeated reports of slurs, threats, harassment. A home — a sanctuary — burned to the ground. These are not coincidences. These are the symptoms of a system turning a blind eye while a community is being terrorized.

We ask: How many cries for help must be ignored before someone listens? How much trauma must be endured before it’s taken seriously?

Failing to name this for what it is — a hate crime — is not just a legal oversight. It is a denial of truth. A denial of humanity. And a denial of justice for the victims who have lived in fear, pain, and silence for far too long.

Jonathan Joss was murdered in what many believe is a hate crime and is — yet the accused (Ceja Alvarez) is already out on bond, from a first-degree murder charge. First-degree murder should never be met with freedom. This is more than just a legal failure. — It’s a message that hate and violence are being tolerated

This petition has already been signed by thousands, and every signature is a reminder that justice cannot wait. The people demand action.

To the SAPD:

This is your moment to stand on the side of justice. To show this city — and the world — that hate will not be brushed aside. That targeted violence will not be allowed to hide behind bureaucracy. That every person, regardless of who they are or whom they love, deserves safety, dignity, and protection under the law.

We urge you — classify this for what it is. A hate crime. And let justice finally begin.
