Justice for Jalani Lovett

Justice for Jalani Lovett
The Issue
On September 22, 2021, Jalani Lovett was found dead inside of Los Angeles' Men's Central Jail (MCJ). Men's Central Jail is the largest jail facility in the U.S. and is one of the most dangerous jails in the world.
Jalani was housed in solitary confinement in the 3000 block of MCJ, a section of the jail notorious for its role as the home to the LA County Sheriff Deputy Gang known as the '3000 boys.' The 3000 boys are known for using excessive force and even murdering incarcerated people housed in the 3000 block.
While the LA County Sheriff's Department asserts that Jalani's death was an 'accidental' overdose, the Lovett family has received conflicting evidence. Terry Lovett, Jalani's mother, received photos detailing the physical abuse to Jalani's body. There are numerous inconsistencies between the incident report and the coroner's report, both prepared under the supervision of LASD. Jalani's toxicology report doesn't match LASD's story that Jalani had died of an overdose. And Jalani's death certificate is still incomplete, listing the cause of death as "deferred" which indicates that the medical examiner is still investigating. The unanswered questions and complicity in the deaths of so many at the hands of LASD make Jalani's case a focus for the fight for accountability from LASD.
Jalani was only 27 years old when he died. Jalani grew up in Oakland, CA, as one of six siblings. He was a loving son, grandson, and uncle to his nieces and nephews. Jalani loved to spend time with his family, taking care of the younger kids, and lived with such excitement about his future as an uncle. He loved to play basketball and coach kids in sports and was even working towards becoming a rapper. His life was tragically cut short due to the negligence and deliberate indifference to human life by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
The family of Jalani is calling on the Attorney General of California, Rob Bonta, to do the following:
- Hold a meeting with Jalani's mother, Terry Lovett, to discuss her findings from her own investigation into Jalani's death,
- Remove all security holds on Jalani's records,
- Provide the Lovett family with all reports and records involving Jalani's death.
Please sign the petition and help raise awareness of Jalani's story and to bring justice to his family.
