Justice for Innocent Puppy Killed by Louisiana Police Officer

Justice for Innocent Puppy Killed by Louisiana Police Officer
The Issue
Apollo was just a baby. A 16-week-old rescue puppy who loved his family and posed no threat to anyone.
But on the night of April 10, 2021, his life was violently taken by Officer Derrick Burmaster of the New Orleans Police Department.
Responding to a domestic disturbance call, Officer Burmaster entered a gated yard uninvited and shot Apollo three times as the 22-pound pup approached him.
Internal investigations concluded the shooting was unjustified. Apollo didn’t bite. He didn’t even threaten. Yet he died in his family’s arms.
Despite overwhelming evidence, including bodycam footage and a unanimous ruling by the Use of Force Review Board that Apollo was not a threat, the department shockingly cleared Officer Burmaster of wrongdoing. This decision disregards its own policies and further damages public trust in a system already under federal scrutiny for excessive force and a culture of impunity.
Apollo’s family continues to suffer severe emotional trauma. They were forced to watch their beloved dog die while screaming, “That’s a baby, that’s a puppy!”
Officer Burmaster has now shot and killed two dogs in similar situations over the years.
But now, justice may finally be within reach. Apollo’s heartbroken family is suing Officer Burmaster, and they deserve to win.
