Justice for Indigenous Peoples: Addressing the Disproportionate Impacts of Climate Change

The Issue

To the Government of Canada,

We, the undersigned, strongly advocate for justice on behalf of Indigenous communities across Canada, who face disproportionate impacts due to the devastating effects of climate change. As evidence of our claims, as of the end of 2022, approximately 2,100 climate change-related court cases have been filed globally, highlighting the global struggle against climate change, with many cases directly involving or led by Indigenous peoples. Despite the critical nature of these lawsuits, a significant portion has been unjustly dismissed.

A notable example includes the 2020 lawsuit initiated by 15 young Canadians representing various Indigenous communities against the Canadian government. This legal action aimed to hold the government accountable for its contributions to climate change but was unfortunately dismissed. Similarly, the Wet’suwet’en people's lawsuit against the Canadian Government sought urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, yet faced dismissal. These dismissals often stem from a systemic bias within the judiciary, which is predominantly trained in Western legal systems and frequently overlooks the unique perspectives, rights, and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples.

This systemic disregard for Indigenous knowledge and rights in legal proceedings underscores the need for immediate reform. We demand that the Canadian government:

  • Enhance the inclusion of Indigenous ways of knowing and doing within its knowledge and policy frameworks.
  • Acknowledge and proactively address the disproportionate impacts of climate change on Indigenous communities.
  • Implement immediate and impactful measures to mitigate climate change, integrating Indigenous knowledge and values.
  • Guarantee that Indigenous voices are valued and considered in all decision-making processes concerning environmental policies and climate action.
  • Support initiatives led by Indigenous youth and communities aimed at combating climate change and protecting their lands and waters.

By signing this petition, we express our unwavering support for Indigenous peoples in Masset and throughout Canada. We demand justice, accountability, and decisive action to combat the climate crisis and uphold Indigenous rights. Together, we aim to foster a sustainable and just future for all.
