Justice for iCarly

The Issue

iCarly wasn't just any TV show, it was one that people around the world grew up with as kids and onto adulthood.

It didn't just play, it grew on everyone and became one of the most memorable shows and franchises on television.

It grew one of the largest, strongest, and most well-dedicated fanbases as well as popular merchandise, games, and even TV movies, including a crossover with Victorious (which the show itself sadly got cancelled on Nickelodeon).

It had an original and ideal plot where a girl named Carly Shay created her own live web series (directed by Freddie Benson), and lived with a tall brother named Spencer Shay who sculpted and often set things on fire that came out of nowhere, while her original best friend was Sam Puckett who's always had the unique behavior, and Carly had arch enemies such as Nevil Papperman and Chuck, who invented the fictional number derf, as well as Lewbert, who was the employee of Bushwell Plaza a well as a crazed man with a wart, and Norah Dershlit, who was a complete psycho, along with Mrs. Ackerman, who was a crazed teacher (that thankfully got arrested).

It taught life lessons about having fun and making friends and dealing with tough situations and hard times and getting through them.

There was real comedy and outstanding dialogue, including many random segments that often end with random dancing (dancing just for fun) and had plenty of sketches including Messin' With Lewbert.

It without a doubt had some of the most legendary guest stars including Lucas Cruikshank (who was the first to hit and pass 1 million subscribers due to his Fred character), along with David Archuleta, Emily Ratajkowski (as Gibby's girlfriend), James Maslow (from Big Time Rush), Victoria Justice (who played as Tori Vega on Victorious), Ariana Grande (for the Victorious crossover), Danielle Morrow (as Nora Dershlit), Jack Black, and even the former first lady Michelle Obama, along with Hannah Stocking, etc.

Each episode and season was versatile and told a story at the same time, and each was filled with a mix of comedy and drama in many ways and others.

Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide was a cute children's sitcom, and Drake and Josh, The Thundermans, The Haunted Hathaways, Henry Danger, Tyler Perry's Young Dylan, and That Girl Lay Lay on Nickelodeon were common teen sitcoms (though Drake and Josh was a great one with life-learning lessons), yet live-action series such as House of Anubis and Every Witch Way incorporated a telenovela-style drama format.

But iCarly was something special, it was something we grew immediately familiar with and grew to this cultural phenomenon that broke barriers and became a great example of highly influential and memorable shows worldwide, which include shows such as Friends, Seinfeld, M*A*S*H*, Boy Meets World, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Arrested Development, The Golden Girls, The Goldbergs, Gilmore Girls, Full House, Kenan and Kel, Sesame Street, Arthur, TMNT, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Simpsons, Phineas and Ferb, or even horror TV series such as The Walking Dead, or sci-fi series like Doctor Who and Star Trek, or anime like Pokémon, Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.

I know some numerous people didn't like the more grown-up format of the revival, as they grew up watching its more youth-oriented format on Nickelodeon, but let's face it and accept that shows can evolve even in demographics as they grow, and as the actors and actresses grow, the audience grows too, and the story does too, telling us to accept changes in styles with time, and that is evolution on a level perhaps never seen before on the screens anywhere.

That's what a coming-of-age show should also be defined as, and iCarly was a true coming-of-age sitcom and story.

It had some great role models, with Miranda Cosgrove's clever, funny, and life-learning roles, and Jerry Trainor as Spencer Shay was incredibly funny and had a unique personality of sculpting and how some things caught fire out of nowhere, and his priceless reactions (yet was also the inventor of Newton bowling balls), and Gibby was the chubby one, while Freddie Benson always mastered his directing skills at filming the live web series iCarly, which in fact popularized live-streaming and further defined memes and became a meme.

It was also neat to introduce new people, showing the evolution of shows like it, and that's also a factor in reality.

It premiered on Nickelodeon cable on September 8, 2007 and while it originally ended on November 23, 2012, it revived on Paramount+ until its cancellation on October 2023 during the revival's 3rd season, which was the overall saga's 9th season.

Yet this was when Carly's mom was underway with appearing, and Carly was continuing onto her next chapter, all of which were something we waited a long time for.

So much more could've happened, yet maybe even people like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Olivia Rodrigo, Olivia Holt, Sabrina Carpenter, Beyonce, Shakira, Camila Cabello, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, or even bands like Blackpink, BTS, or Twice, and actresses like Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Aniston, or Margot Robbie, or even businesswoman Martha Stewart, and just maybe Elon Musk, could've possibly made guest appearances, though it's unlikely that all might apply even if the show ever got resurrected.

Yet guest-starring stars from other regions on Earth, including K-Pop stars would show an appreciation of such international cultures.

If a mega hit like iCarly can get cancelled, we should believe that the same thing could happen to shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants for example, showing us how even the biggest and most influential shows can fall victim, and iCarly surpassed SpongeBob SquarePants twice, with episodes such as iQuitiCarly, which got 8.848 million views, and the episode iSaved a Life (where Freddie saved Carly) which garnered a whopping total of 11.164 million views when it first aired.

That makes iSavedALife the show's most watched episode as well as Nickelodeon's most watched live-action episode and its second most watched of any genre, only surpassed by the Rugrats episode All Growed Up, which got 11.913 million views.

That's more views than the most watched SpongeBob episode (Atlantis SquarePantis which had 8.757-9.22 million views when first aired - including the time-shifting factor).

Therefore iCarly overall was watched a large number of times more than the average TV show today is.

While some shows end up with low or limited ratings and viewers, some people just aren't watching them for reasons (such as the history of the network losing many good shows or developing new interests), but they always have the chance to watch them if that's their choices and interests, and they can change their minds and interests from time to time, and there's always someone who's curious to see what's in store from the saga.

It's unfair thought for a good show with similar ratings to a low-quality show to get the cancel button while the other goes on.

It’s also unbelievable how Microsoft gave the show to Paramount+ which has such history.

Netflix has done so with Saved by the Bell, The Babysitter’s Club, Anne of Green Gables (with an E), Winx (Fate), though kept watchable shows such as Riverdale and Stranger Things (which both received super high ratings) as well as Arrested Development.

Yet many of the most viewed episodes of both SpongeBob and iCarly were between the 2000's and 2010's.

Yet this should also raise the awareness of the possibility of shows such as HBO Max's Euphoria and Netflix's Stranger Things as well as CBS's Young Sheldon or even award shows such as the Oscars and GRAMMYs or competition series like American Idol, The X-Factor, The Masked Singer, The Voice, Survivor, The Amazing Race, or Big Brother, or even game shows such as Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, or Family Feud, all being cancelled, and with such a big hit being cancelled, it shouldn't be too much more surprising to think of or see those getting cancelled if you took any notes about this cancellation.

Nickelodeon had lots of not only cartoons or CGI (known as nicktoons), but live-action sitcoms (known as nickcoms), and iCarly wasn't just any live-action nickcom, it was the live-action nickcom, the definitive one, and it was even one of the most original and influential live-action sitcoms on television and entertainment.

When people born on or near the 21st century think of live action TV and comedy, iCarly was among the biggest ones of the century remembered to this day.

Not all shows or sagas become so influential, and rarely do we ever see something so influential come out nowadays when it comes to TV shows.

Among the latest influential shows to come out on TV and streaming services are Stranger Things, Euphoria, Young Sheldon, The Masked Singer, The X-Factor, American Idol, The Price Is Right, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Yellowstone, The Bachelor and Bachelorette as well as Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Big Brother.

Nickelodeon and such channels have had issues in certain shows being cancelled during the ownership by Viacom, and a number of quality shows in the past have been cancelled.

Yet the SAG-AFTRA writers strikes have also interfered with the production of shows and movies and longevity of them.

iCarly had a contributing role in many people becoming online influencers, and was also apparently one of the things that helped define the fun of partying on platforms like TikTok, Facebook and Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, therefore it wasn't just Ke$ha's song Tik Tok or the defunct platform Vine that influenced that, but thanks also to Random Dancing that helped define doing so on video.

In other words, iCarly helped play a significant role in defining modern society, popularizing social media as well as video blogging (vlogging) and live-streaming mainstream.

It's one thing to cancel a simple show, but it's another thing to cancel one that created a highly influential saga and franchise that endured culture and is known for generations.

While Dan Schneider had his controversial moments, he wasn't the only one, as Chris Savino was a major one too (yet even got fired) and the show he created, the Loud House, is still running, and Michael Rubiner is its new showrunner, and it's not a super bad show, as it has a plot and some role models and running gags as well as upbeat soundtracks and songs.

The cancellation of the iCarly revival was in fact the cancellation of the whole iCarly saga, which hit its sweet 16th birthday in 2023.

18 in 2025 and 20 in 2027.

After remembering Arrested Development's Netflix resurrection in 2013 from the 2006 cancellation by Fox, stuff like that should consider being taken notes for shows like iCarly, which sure had plenty of demand over its existence, story, and acting quality in history (which Arrested Development also had) even regarding the reasons, indicating iCarly deserves all its positive demand and respect instead of being poured down the drain no matter what people love or hate about it.

I feel very uncertain whether or not this petition is even helpful, and I'm only 1 out of millions upon millions to ever watched the show before signing in and speaking out, and it's been around 3 months since October 2023, but I have all my effort to make as many people as possible aware of this.

A 5-star sitcom and saga that changed the world forever.

Such series (original or revived) that have real quality comedy and entertainment should continue toward real finales instead of being cancelled.

iCarly originally had a real finale for its Nickelodeon TV run, but its new Paramount+ run didn't, it was killed off (and that means the whole saga was killed off as well).

All that time, money, hard work, and effort over all the years it was produced and aired for, poured down the drain.

The cast and crew deserved so much more and better.

Though we did agree that the Lizzie McGuire saga was over with under Hilary Duff's bold move knowing she wanted to continue her adult lifestyle living with children in addition instead of playing a G-rated character on a G-rated series on the more-family-friendly network Disney+.

Such a move played a role in the revival of a Nick classic.

I would get as much merchandise, such as cards and/or shirts anytime, in support and do everything it would take to give the show the justice it deserves no matter the issues and conflicts, with hopes that the network companies would actually understand the impact shows and franchises like iCarly had on mankind growing up and thriving as adults, and give the people the respect that's recommended with this hit, and besides, they sure did make a lot of money off of it, and cancelling it prevents them from making enough, knowing that given how influential it was, the odds of another live-action sitcom competing with it are negligible, meaning the odds of Nick making so much money from something other than SpongeBob SquarePants or even the Loud House or iCarly for example are slim with what we have nowadays.

And not all people (in a cast or not) have the same interest or want to do the same things, and network managers also tell what happens.

Though they and companies should understand how important some franchises are and give them respect.

And as a note to companies including Microsoft, Viacom, Paramount+, Netflix, and such, respect is more valuable than money.

The actors, actresses, and directors worked so hard with as much effort as could and dealt with for providing a groundbreaking mega hit of a series franchise to the world, and it must've been worth it all for them and for the gift they gave us.

And one that's remembered in all aspects for generations.

It's impossible to imagine any network surviving without the revival or a world without a completed iCarly franchise, which revolutionized web entertainment worldwide.

Though I can only imagine how many people might move onto something other than Paramount+ after becoming more aware of them cancelling popular franchises like iCarly.

Either way, we should honestly consider a kind protest worldwide in support for this one of-a-kind series and its cast, and that the show must go on.

With faith and justice.

Long live iCarly and its cast.
