Golden Ears mother bear was killed by the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service.

“Scratch” Golden Ears Mama Bear

I didn’t want her in her death to be left misunderstood and worst of all-misrepresented…I was fortunate to have talked to people who knew her and here is what I learned.

Mama black bear at Golden Ear was named “Scratch”.
*She was named for the mark on her nose -not for scratching cars.
*She was never aggressive to people.
*She never entered cars.
*The tent she walked into was an abandoned one filled with food.
*She always left when asked.
*The area was littered with food and trash, and expecting her to delicately step around a Twinkie on her own trail is absurd.
*She was a calm, trusting mother bear who loved her cubs.
*She felt safe around people - and she deserved better.

The COS claimed they had "exhausted all options" before destroying her. They did not. They arrived with traps and killed her, full stop.
Calling her "aggressive" was not just inaccurate — it was a justification after the fact.

Rest Scratch💕and thank you for being so kind and patient with people -and for bringing your babies into the world.

This unacceptable loss resonates to the traumatized  community members who work so hard to keep their bears safe, and the traumatized orphans themselves…

Let the Province know your grief and anger will be pave the way for change to the BCCOS -ensuring that public accountability of this Agency is enforced.

Communities are speaking up for their bears -they will not continue to support this publicly funded cruelty….

In Golden Ears Park the Province is killing another bear. This time a mother with two cubs.

Trap set for a mother bear with two cubs.
After all the voices speaking strongly for our bears-this! This proves we have a differcult year ahead of us.
Two traps set for this family at Golden Ears Park -clearly, this is wrong!

This mama bear should be allowed to continue to raise the cubs she loves, teach them the world, keeping them safe in a place that isn't always safe. Her cubs need their mother - her warmth, her courage, her quiet wisdom…But the COS will kill her and any other bear who happens to enter the trap. They will die for being smart, and mana will die for being a bear who loves her cubs the way nature intended -and they her.

When did intelligence and love become something to destroy. Stand tall speak loudly for this bear family and your kind community who hearts are broken.

*Call the RAPP LINE and write your MLA. Let them know you will not sit back and allow for another mother bear to die -and know, you are well supported.

Thank you.

Golden Ears Park, a cherished natural reserve, is currently overshadowed by a grim scenario—a mother bear and her two cubs face an untimely end due to provincial authorities setting traps to eliminate them. This move is part of a strategy that is not only unwarranted but also deeply misguided, wrongfully targeting bears who play an essential role in the ecological balance.

Recent reports indicate that two traps have been set within Golden Ears Park to capture this bear family. No bear should suffer the consequences of relocation or elimination, especially a mother bear nurturing her cubs and teaching them essential survival skills. These actions directly contradict the conservation efforts and public sentiment which strongly support the protection and humane treatment of wildlife.

The issue stems from increasing human-wildlife conflicts as humans continue to encroach on natural habitats, decreasing bears' living areas. It is imperative to explore and implement alternative measures that allow humans and wildlife to coexist peacefully. Solutions include better waste management to prevent attracting bears, public education campaigns about cohabitating with wildlife, and non-lethal deterrence methods to guide bears away from populated areas.

We urge the provincial government and park authorities to reconsider their approach and halt the trapping of this mother bear and her cubs. Implementing more sustainable wildlife management practices not only benefits the bears but enriches our natural heritage for future generations.

Your voice matters in preserving these majestic animals and the integrity of their ecosystems. Sign this petition to demand an alternative, more humane approach to wildlife management in Golden Ears Park and beyond. Protect our wildlife, protect our future. Sign now and help save this bear family.
