Justice for Gabriel, A Safer U.S. Highway 93
The Issue
On December 14th 2015 Kristina Lakey and her son Gabriel were driving northbound on the U.S. 93 from North Las Vegas, Nevada to Idaho to visit family for Christmas. 8 .41 miles north of Hollister, ID, Kristina and Gabriel were struck head on by another driver. Gabriel succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and Gabriel was in an appropriate forward facing car seat with a 5 point harness. U.S. 93 is an undivided U.S. Highway. Due to inclimate weather, road markings including center line, were not visible. Many areas of the U.S. 93 have been known as Blood Alley's because of the number of fatalities that occur on a yearly basis. I believe that Gabriel would still be alive if the U.S. 93 had a center divider that was reflective and visible in weather conditions. One death is too many and Gabriel was not the first fatality along the U.S. 93. It is time for change! We need reflective dividers on all U.S. Highways and Roads where vehicles drive over 55 mph. There are far too many highway deaths every year that occur on undivided highways.
