The Issue

We, the undersigned, call upon Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the Florida Board of Executive Clemency, and the judicial system to ensure that Harjinder Singh faces the fullest extent of the law for his actions on August 12, 2025, which tragically resulted in the loss of three innocent lives on the Florida Turnpike. While we acknowledge the pain of all involved, our hearts are with the families of the victims - a 30-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman, and a 54-year-old man - whose lives were cut short due to reckless and preventable actions.

This petition is not driven by vengeance but by a deep commitment to justice, accountability, and public safety. Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old truck driver, allegedly performed an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike, causing his tractor-trailer to jackknife and block the highway. A minivan, unable to avoid the obstruction, collided with the trailer, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. Investigations revealed that Singh failed an English Language Proficiency assessment, correctly answering only 2 of 12 verbal questions and identifying just 1 of 4 highway traffic signs. Despite this, he was issued a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in California, raising serious concerns about systemic failures in licensing standards.

Driving a commercial vehicle is a privilege that carries immense responsibility. Operating such a vehicle without a proper understanding of road rules, signs, or the language necessary to navigate safely is not merely a mistake - it is a reckless endangerment of public safety. Singh’s decision to attempt an illegal maneuver, coupled with his flight to California after the crash, underscores a disregard for the consequences of his actions. The victims’ families deserve justice, not excuses. Their loved ones cannot be brought back, and no petition for leniency can erase the profound loss they endure.

We recognize that some advocate for leniency, arguing that the crash was unintentional. However, accountability must reflect the gravity of the outcome. Three lives were lost due to preventable actions, and justice demands that those responsible face appropriate consequences. Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide and three counts of manslaughter - charges that reflect the severity of the tragedy. A Florida judge has already ruled him a flight risk and denied bond, citing his status as an unauthorized alien and the forcible nature of his alleged crimes.

We also call for a broader examination of how Singh obtained a CDL despite his documented inability to understand basic road signs and language requirements. This tragedy highlights the need for stricter oversight in issuing commercial licenses to ensure that only qualified individuals operate vehicles capable of causing catastrophic harm. The victims’ families, and all Americans, deserve safe roads free from preventable dangers.

We respectfully request the following:

1. Full Prosecution Under the Law:  Harjinder Singh must face the maximum penalties for his charges, up to 45 years, to reflect the severity of the loss and deter future recklessness.

2. No Clemency or Reduced Sentencing: Any reduction in sentencing would undermine justice for the victims and send a dangerous message that such actions carry minimal consequences.

3. Systemic Reform: Implement stricter federal and state regulations to ensure that commercial drivers meet rigorous language and safety standards, preventing future tragedies.

4. Support for the Victims’ Families:   Prioritize resources and support for those grieving, ensuring their voices are heard above campaigns for leniency.

This petition stands for justice, not prejudice. It is about ensuring that our roads are safe, that accountability is upheld, and that the memory of the victims is honored through a fair and resolute judicial process. We urge all who value life, safety, and justice to join us in demanding that Harjinder Singh be held fully accountable for his actions.
