Justice for Emeka Nzeruike: Demand Accountability and Compensation for a Nigerian Child Imprisoned Without Trial

Petition Text:

At the age of just 12 years old, Emeka Nzeruike was arrested in 2015 and thrown into a Nigerian prison alone, afraid, and without a trial. No lawyer. No hearing. No justice. For 10 years, Emeka was held in detention, forgotten by a system that should have protected him. He became a victim of a broken justice system that continues to fail the poor and voiceless across Nigeria and Africa.

In 2024, Emeka was finally released. But how do you return a lost childhood? How do you restore 10 years stolen from a boy who hadn’t even started life?

This is not just a failure it is a national disgrace. A child was locked away for a decade, and no one was held responsible.

We, the undersigned, demand immediate and public accountability. No child should ever be imprisoned without trial. No family should ever have to search for justice for a full decade. The system must answer.

We Demand the Following:

 1. ₦500 million compensation be awarded to Emeka Nzeruike for wrongful imprisonment, psychological trauma, and stolen years.

 2. A public investigation into the judge(s), police officers, and prison officials involved in the case.

 3. Immediate suspension or disbarment of any judicial or law enforcement figure who failed to follow due process.

 4. Full mental health and educational rehabilitation support for Emeka at the government’s expense.

 5. National implementation of a child justice policy that prohibits the detention of minors without a court hearing or legal representation.

 6. A federal mandate for child protection laws to be enforced across all Nigerian states, with harsh penalties for violations.

Why This Matters:

This is not just about one boy. Emeka’s case reflects what millions of poor Nigerians, especially children, suffer across the continent. Justice in Nigeria often serves the rich, while the poor are forgotten. Emeka’s story is a wake-up call. If a child can disappear into the prison system for 10 years without trial, what about innocent adults? How many Emekas are still behind bars right now?

The Nigerian justice system must be reformed and it must begin with justice for Emeka Nzeruike.

Who We’re Addressing:

 • The Federal Ministry of Justice

 • The Lagos State Government (if applicable)

 • The Nigerian Correctional Service

 • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)

 • The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

 • UNICEF and Amnesty International (to apply international pressure)

Sign this petition if you believe:

 • No child should go to prison without a trial.

 • The poor deserve equal protection under the law.

 • Justice must serve all  not just the wealthy.

Let’s make Emeka’s name a symbol of justice. Let’s protect the next child before it’s too late.
