Two greyhounds died in agony inside a locked metal bike locker at a train station in Penrith, New South Wales. One died on the spot. The other, suffering from extreme heatstroke, died later at the vet.

Now a 57-year-old man—identified in local media as Sandy Norrie—has been charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty, including aggravated cruelty, reckless killing, and failure to provide basic care. He’s due back in court on November 27.

We are calling for justice for these dogs, and we demand:

• The maximum penalties under NSW law for all charges related to this case
• A permanent, lifetime ban on the defendant owning or having custody of animals
• Public commitment from prosecutors and the court that this case will not be minimized
• Stronger enforcement of existing animal cruelty laws so no animal ever suffers this way again.

These dogs did not die from natural causes. They died locked in a metal box, likely crying out in confusion and pain. That is not neglect—it’s torture.

Greyhounds are among Australia’s most vulnerable animals, often exploited and discarded after racing careers. But no dog, no matter the breed, should be treated like this.

In 2025, there is no excuse for this kind of cruelty. South Australia recently increased maximum penalties for animal abuse to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. NSW must ensure it uses every available legal tool to send a clear message: this will not be tolerated.

We call on the NSW courts, prosecutors, and animal welfare officials to honor these animals with real accountability—not just another suspended sentence.
