This Sunday, June 15, I’ll be appearing on 60 Minutes Australia to talk about DES (diethylstilbestrol) -- a drug with a devastating legacy that has affected millions around the world, including my own family.
You can watch the segment from anywhere in the world on YouTube on Sunday, June 15, around 11:00 am eastern time:
You can watch and share the episode promo now on Instagram and Twitter.
But June 15 isn’t just any day. It’s the day my mother died -- just before midnight in 2019. She had been diagnosed with stage 4 gallbladder cancer two days before Mother’s Day. One month later, on Father’s Day, she was declared dead.
I will always believe that my mother’s exposure to DES -- prescribed to her in a prenatal vitamin -- caused her death. Gallbladder cancer is extremely rare. It doesn’t run in my family. Fewer than 5,000 Americans die from it each year.
This Sunday, I’ll be watching the episode while thinking of her. And then I’ll take my dad out for Father’s Day brunch. Despite what DES took from my family, my parents gave me something far greater: the ability to stand up, show up, and speak out. They taught me how to use my voice to make change -- and I intend to keep doing just that.
So I’m asking you to do two things:
- Watch the 60 Minutes Australia episode on Sunday, June 15 and share it. Tell your friends, your family, your networks. The more people who hear this story, the more pressure we can apply for justice.👉 https://www.youtube.com/@60MinutesAU
- Sign the petition in support of Congressman Jim McGovern’s DES Resolution: 👉 www.change.org/JusticeForDESFamilies
Together, we can push for recognition, accountability, and justice for DES families.
Thank you,
Caitlin McCarthy
