Justice for deer axed to death by cops! Stop Kenora’s Deer Cull!

The Issue

Warning: Disturbing Video.  https://animaljustice.ca/blog/opp-hit-deer-with-axe

On Labour Day weekend, a concerned resident of Kenora called Ontario Provincial Police to attend to a road injured deer.  But instead of calling a wildlife rescue, the police decided to beat the injured doe with an axe handle in front of people, then leaving her beaten body on someone’s front garden.  She died an hour later from head trauma.  We would like these officers removed from OPP and criminally charged with animal cruelty.

Currently, Kenora sees deer as “pests”. Kenora has an active “deer management program” that allows and encourages residents to shoot deer every fall with arrows and bullets, and even take their bodies to the dump. We would like Kenora to immediately stop its cull, ban hunting, sign on to the Plant Based Treaty, and bring in an all animal protection bylaw in addition to its wildlife feeding ban. https://www.kenora.ca/en/living-here/deer-management.aspx

We would like Kenora Animal Services to include deer and exotic/wild animal rescue as part of their services. Currently, Kenora only has contracted out humane services for cats and dogs.

We would like municipalities and the province to fund a 24/7 civilian run animal ambulance, to attend to animals every day or night, including holidays.  We would like the Ministry of the Solicitor General to have a third party investigation every time police injure or kill an animal. Currently, police only have to tick a box on a provincial Use of Force form for “dispatching an animal” with a firearm, species not reported, no reason given, no list of attempted alternatives, no list for non firearm use of force, injuring, tasering, scaring off, etc.  We would like a complete overhaul of the Use of Force model, and replace it with a Humane Intervention model.
