The Issue

Bryan is currently serving a 25-year sentence in the Texas prison system — not for violence, not for theft, but for surviving a life of abandonment, mental illness, and state failure.

Bryan was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, and Tourette’s before the age of 5. He was placed in mental institutions, medicated into silence, and eventually discarded by the very people and systems meant to protect him.

His childhood was filled with abuse, poverty, trauma, and neglect. At 13, his mother placed him in Mexia State School, where he was physically assaulted, sexually assaulted and left deeply scarred. At 17, he was released into the world with no education, no therapy, no support system — and no hope.

He later became homeless and addicted, a direct result of the untreated pain he had endured his entire life. In 2013, Bryan was accused of burglary — but there was no evidence he ever entered a home. No fingerprints, no stolen property. Only the word of people who beat and robbed him. He was arrested, labeled a habitual offender, and sentenced to 25 years.

Bryan has now spent over a decade in segregation, alone in a cell, without the treatment or rehabilitation he desperately needs. He cannot read. He has intellectual disabilities. He completed the Therapeutic Diversion Program and still remains isolated.

We are calling on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, and Governor Greg Abbott to:

Reclassify Bryan’s custody level

Transfer him out of segregation
Provide comprehensive mental health care and trauma-informed treatment
Review his case for clemency, resentencing, or compassionate release

Bryan deserves more than a cell. He deserves a chance.

Help us give him one. Sign, share, and speak up.
