Justice for black mhs students: expulsion and firing of E and her mother
The Issue
- 3 black girls at Minnetonka High School, M, K, and L, were bullied and harassed by basketball player E, calling them the n-word and telling them to k*ll themselves. The vice principal dismissed M, claiming she had no proof of them being called "dirty [n-word]'s", though K has physical proof of being told to k*ll herself. All E received was a 1 day suspension. E's mom, a teacher at MHS and the basketball team's coach L, proceeded to silence and blackmail the basketball team that E is on. 7 of the 9 players are BIPOC. Many of the black students who spoke up are being silenced and threatened to receive consequences for standing up for themselves and calling out corrupt, racist behavior. The principal emailed a statement to point out the "accusations of hurtful and derogatory words", claiming "there are strong feelings involved on all sides of such matters". Since then, online platforms have been the only place remotely safe enough to share this story. M has an audio recording of her conversation with the vice principal, K has photographic proof of E telling her to kill herself, and there are accounts from at least one player on the basketball team of being forced to remain silent. It's crucial that E be expelled, and that Leah be fired to create a safer environment for black students at MHS. Saying you need proof of being called a slur shows that we cannot trust school staff to support oppressed students. How can the school say they offer helpful resources when they refuse to help?
