Justice for birds at Open Sky Raptor Foundation

Justice for birds at Open Sky Raptor Foundation
The Issue
In September 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency came to Open Sky Raptor Foundation, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation centre, and cruelly killed several rescued domestic ducks, geese, and chickens by breaking their necks, or by using incorrect doses of drugs after testing them for avian flu in an invasive way. They did not even wait for test results. None of these birds were for consumption. Instead of randomly killing birds, they should have only humanely euthanized sick birds and quarantined the ones who tested negative.
The CFIA then called the Provincial Animal Welfare agency to complain about the keeping of birds in captivity, even though wildlife rehabilitation is a provincial ministry of natural resources issue. PAW wanted to relocate some birds to a roadside zoo. Three other rehabilitation birds were killed.
We would like the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to leave wildlife rehabilitators and sanctuaries alone. We would also like them to stop killing healthy birds and to only humanely euthanize birds who test positive for avian flu. We would also like the Provincial Animal Welfare agency to leave wildlife rehabilitation centres alone, and instead go after roadside zoos, hunting farms, fur farms, and factory farms, the real vectors of avian flu.
