On May 16, 2024, Atlanta native Area Barnett was tragically murdered, and her case remains unsolved. Alarming new information has surfaced that raises serious concerns about the integrity of the investigation, and we demand immediate action to hold the Atlanta Police Department (APD) accountable.

It has now been revealed that Detective Jenkins, one of the officers involved in Area’s case, is the uncle of Area’s former partner. This critical conflict of interest was never disclosed to Area’s family during their exchanges with law enforcement. Furthermore, new details have emerged about the tumultuous nature of Area and her former partner's relationship, which may be directly relevant to the case.

By omitting this connection, APD may have deliberately compromised the investigation and concealed key evidence. This is a gross violation of public trust, and we refuse to let Area’s murder be ignored.

We demand: 

• Full public disclosure of all conflicts of interest related to the handling of Area Barnett’s case

• An independent investigation into potential misconduct and evidence concealment.

• The immediate termination of any officer found to have knowingly participated in concealing evidence or compromising the investigation.

• Legal action against any APD officials who obstructed justice in this case.
