"Justice for A'Cariyon: Petition for Cari's Law - A Call to Protect Lives in Residential A
The Issue
I am writing to you as a grieving parent who has tragically lost their 9-year-old son, A'Cariyon Dwight Perry, due to a horrific incident involving a speeding truck and an ice cream truck in our residential neighborhood on October 4th, 2023. This devastating event has not only shattered our family but has also exposed a critical issue that demands immediate attention and reform within our community.
On October 4th, 2023, A'Cariyon was struck by a speeding truck while innocently getting ice cream from the ice cream truck stationed in front of our home. The driver, in a callous act of negligence, not only ran the stop sign on the ice cream truck but callously fled the scene, only stopping a block away. This act of recklessness resulted in the tragic loss of my beloved son's life, leaving our family with an irreparable void.
In light of this tragedy, I am seeking justice for A'Cariyon and advocating for the implementation of vital changes to prevent similar incidents in the future. It is my fervent belief that this cause is not only about seeking justice for my son but also about protecting the lives of all children and pedestrians in residential areas.
I propose the enactment of what I would like to call "Cari's Law," a comprehensive set of regulations aimed at ensuring the safety of pedestrians in residential areas and holding accountable those responsible for vehicular homicides. The key provisions of Cari's Law include:
1. Regulation and Licensing of Ice Cream Trucks: All ice cream trucks should be subject to strict regulations and licensing requirements, similar to school buses. This would ensure that drivers are adequately trained, vehicles are properly maintained, and safety measures are in place.
2. Installation of Cameras on Ice Cream Trucks: To enhance accountability, all ice cream trucks should be equipped with cameras to monitor driver behavior and record any incidents that may occur during their routes.
3. Uniform Punishments for Traffic Violations: Drivers of ice cream trucks, as well as other vehicles operating in residential areas, should face uniform punishments for traffic violations, with penalties commensurate with the severity of the offense.
4. Vehicular Homicide Legislation: Advocate for the amendment of existing legislation to ensure that vehicular homicide in residential areas is treated with the same severity as any other form of homicide, resulting in proportional punishment for those found guilty.
I am initiating this petition to garner support from our community and beyond. By signing this petition, individuals express their solidarity with the cause and demand swift and comprehensive action to prevent further tragedies like the one my family has endured. I implore you to consider the gravity of this situation and take the necessary steps to enact Cari's Law, ensuring that the memory of my son is not in vain and that other families are spared from such heartbreak.
I am grateful for your attention to this matter and hopeful that, together, we can bring about positive change and make our community safer for everyone.
My son's life held immense value, and I believe this heartbreaking incident could have been averted if the driver had exercised patience and caution, akin to any responsible parent or individual who understands the necessity of stopping or slowing down in the presence of an ice cream truck in a residential area. The profound pain inflicted upon my family by this tragic accident underscores the urgency for justice to prevail. With the support of our community, I am confident that justice can be served. It is imperative that all drivers be held accountable for their actions on the road, and in the unfortunate event of causing harm or death in a residential area, the consequences should be no different than those for any other individual responsible for such a grievous loss of life.
