The issue

In 2006, Yusef Hasan Sykes, a 23-year-old father and son from Newport News, Virginia, was convicted of First-Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. He received a sentence of Life Imprisonment plus 3 years, with no established release date—his only chance for freedom currently resting in the possibility of geriatric release at age 60.

Yusef chose to go to trial, maintaining his innocence in the murder, though he acknowledged being present at the time of the crime. With a privately paid attorney, he fought for his truth—but justice was not served.

Crucially, evidence has since surfaced that was not included in the original motion of discovery—evidence pointing to a different perpetrator. Despite over 18 years of fighting to prove his innocence and armed with documents to support his claims, Yusef has yet to see the relief he rightfully deserves.

Yusef is not just a number or a statistic. He is a devoted father of four, a son, a brother, a mentor, and a community leader. His loved ones—his children, his siblings, his mother and grandmother, and the memory of his late father and grandfather—have endured the pain of watching a man with so much to offer remain behind bars.

But Yusef has never given up. He is currently back in court pursuing a motion to vacate his conviction, and soon he will be petitioning the Governor of Virginia for a pardon. We are calling on YOU—members of the community, advocates for justice, and compassionate citizens—to stand with Yusef.

Over nearly two decades in the Virginia Department of Corrections, Yusef has transformed his life. He has earned his GED, completed 27 certifications, authored eight books, contributed to the Unlocked Journal, and founded TheDaiseyFoundation, dedicated to uplifting others. His dedication to self-improvement, mentorship, and community involvement proves the power of personal transformation.

Yusef’s story is one of resilience, redemption, and relentless hope—but he cannot walk this road alone. Your voice can make a difference. By signing this petition, you are standing for justice, for second chances, and for the undeniable truth that people can change, grow, and deserve a future.

👉🏾 Sign the petition today to support Yusef Hasan Sykes’ fight for freedom. Help us urge the courts and the Governor of Virginia to give Yusef the second chance he has worked so hard for—and so deeply deserves.
