Having been without shelter for many consecutive months, I was finally been able to place my 6th-shelter at the doorsteps of the UNHCR office on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021. However, on the same day they called the Police to take me away. As the Police arrived, they took me Phone right away and took me to the Ambelokipi Police Station where they held in custody/detention for about 5 hours from 16:30’ to 21:30’.
In the small and stinky detention room, for 5 straight hours, I have been struggling with the stress of losing my shelter again. But after my release and having got back to the doorsteps of the UNHCR’s office, I was relieved to find my shelter still standing there. Because I have no more money and couldn’t get myself another shelter.
Setting up my shelter required a lot of work that took up the whole Wednesday. Although my shelter is now ready for use, wind and waterproofed, but I still need a lot of essentials such as blankets, pillows and etc. which so far due to financial restraints I have not been able to acquire, but that aside, I also spent the whole Thursday and Friday on seeking a solution for my banner that would permanently be placed in front of my shelter for as long as it is there.
The wind had caused some damages to my Roll UP Banner there on Thursday which was more and more critical to have this problem fixed as soon as possible. Because without a banner OR a written sign there would be no indication of my protest there in front of the UNHCR office.
As the Roll Up Banner seems to be very vulnerable at the presence of the wind, I was seeking to get something else of a smaller size printed and glued on a piece of solid wooden board as an alternative. But I could not find any board of the suitable size I was looking for, at least not at any second hand stores collecting these types of materials, and for getting something new the prices was going as high as 40 Euros only for a wooden board of 85 x 130/140/150 cm to 8/18 mm thick in dimensions. Printing the graphic would also cost me something between 20 to 30 Euros depending of the print shop and the materials they use for the print.
Overall, it turned out, this would be more expensive than getting a whole new Roll UP Banner of 85 to 200 cm. Except for the wind factor, either way, they would both be equally susceptible to any other damages such as getting stolen OR broken by the unknown people who tend to harass me there at the doorsteps of the UNHCR at any chances they get.
Besides, if I could find a way to protect the Roll Up Banner from the wind, it would be a lot more fixable, lighter and easier to work with. Hence, eventually, I decided on getting a whole new Roll Up Banner on Friday. I also spent the whole Friday night till about the morning, somewhere I could access, electricity and power up my laptop in designing the new Graphic for my Banner. I am hoping to get it on Monday.
The lack of electricity aside, also once again, I am having extreme difficulties with finding a place for toilet particularly in the Mornings. The neighborhood, the shops around, and even the MSF office that is less than 100 meters away aren’t helping. That’s one of my major daily issues.
Nothing like this should happen to anyone, anywhere and no one should be put through a situation like this.
This is a dire emergency. Please do not be indifferent and ignorant to what is happening here and take action now.
