I was still awake this morning at 3:00 AM outside in the yard of the National Library of Greece in order to finish drafting and sending yet another email to the Australian Government, which this time I addressed the Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Honorable Alex Hawke MP.
The Australian Embassy in Greece; the Australian Senate and Parliament; Australia’s Permanent Representative in the United Nations, High Commission of Australia in Kenya, UNHCR’s offices in Australia and Athens were all among the recipients of the same email.
Moreover, all the Approved Proposing Organizations (APOs) in Australia, Amnesty Australia and many other Human Rights Organizations and NGOs based in Australia have received a blind carbon copy (BCC) of the email as well.
With the expectation of a few minor details, at the end, my email to Honorable Alex Hawke, MP, had turned out to be quite similar to the one I sent to the Prime Minister of Canada and their Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship last week.
Still remaining without shelter and having spent yet another horrible night in the bushes outside in the yard of the National Library of Greece among ants, rats and mosquitoes, I also appeared in front of the Australian Embassy around 12:30 PM in order to convey this pressing Humanitarian Appeal to them in person too.
However, in the public area in front the Australian Embassy, I haven’t yet finished setting up my banner, that I saw a Policeman and a security guy from the building were placing calls to the Police to come and take me away even before talking to me OR whatsoever.
Which is why before the Police gets there, I approached them in order to inform them of my presence there and of my requests. Below how the conversation went on with the Policeman there.
‘’Hello Mr.’’ I said. ‘’Yes, tell me’’ the Policeman replied. ‘’Not you, the other one’’ I told him and said hello to the guy, but he didn’t respond and the Policeman had insisted on talking to him rather than the other person.
‘’I am here in order to speak with a representative from the Australian Embassy. Please inform them that I sent them an email this morning at 3:00 AM and I wish to speak with a representative from the Australian Embassy, preferably the Ambassador himself, Okay?’’ I told the Policeman.
‘’May I see your papers, please?’ The Policeman asked. ‘’Yes’’ I said to him, and while he began climbing the stairs to get the papers, I pointed to my banner and told him ‘’And this is my banner, I am in the public area, I will be staying there, looking forward to meet a representative from the Embassy. Are you going to inform them OR this guy, pointing to the other person there, is going to inform them?’’
Without answering my question, the Policeman said ‘’Can I see your papers, please?’’. ‘’Yes, here are my papers’’ I replied and as I handed a copy of my expired documents to him, I asked, ‘’Who is going to inform them? Are you going to inform them, OR this guy is going to inform them? This is urgent. Dire emergency. Did you hear me, Mr. Policeman?’’ I told him.
But he didn’t respond to anything I said ‘’Mr. Policeman,’’ I asked again. At this point he looked at me and asked ‘’Where is your ID?’’
Pointing at my documents in his hands ‘’That’s all I have; I have nothing else.’’ I said.
‘’That’s nothing. I want to see your ID, please,’’ said the policeman.
‘’That’s all I have, that’s my documentation,’’ I told him, while looking around in distress for the Police which was about to get there.
‘’I don’t see nothing here,’’ the Policeman replied. ‘’Yeah, that’s all I have, I tell you, so, when I have nothing else, I cannot show you anything else,’’ I told him.
At this point the Policeman said ‘’We have to go the Police station to see who you are.’’
‘’Well, Okay, but are you going to inform inside about my presence here and my request for speaking with a representative from the Embassy?’’ I replied to him and asked.
The policeman while holding all my documents in his hands, said ‘’first, I want to see your papers’’. I pointed to my documents in his hands and said ‘’This is my papers’’. He says again ‘’This is nothing.’’ and I told him again, ’’Yeah, that’s all I have, I have been showing this to the Police all the time.’’
‘’Okay, we have to go first to the Police Station to check who you are,’’ The policeman said.
‘’No, I am here first, are you going to inform the Embassy OR not? OR this guy? Who is going to inform the Embassy? ’’ I replied to him and asked again ‘’ Are you going to inform the Embassy OR not?’’
‘’You cannot, I want to see your papers first’’ the Policeman replied.
‘’Why? I am seeking Asylum, I am undocumented’’ I told him. ‘’I want to know who you are’’ the Policeman says again.
Pointing to my papers in his hands ‘’This is my name, over there, you can read it, Nillufary Anwar’’ I told him.
The Policeman starts looking at the documents again, and I asked him one more time ‘’Are you going to inform them OR not? Please, tell me, this is urgent.’’
Without answering my question again, obviously stalling and making excuses, this time the Policeman said ‘’I want the original papers, this is nothing.’’
‘’These are original, I have nothing else’’ I told him. But the Policeman says ‘’No. this is not the original’’.
‘’I have nothing else’’ I told him. ‘’Okay, then we have to go to the Police Station’’ the Policeman said.
‘’I am here to ask for help to get IDs. Are you going to inform the Embassy OR not? I asked you a simple question, I informed you and the other person here, are you informed Mr. security personnel,’’ I called the other guy who was waiting a bit further from us, and continued telling the Policeman standing in front of me, ‘’I am informing you, that I am here to speak with a representative from the Australian Embassy, are you going to inform them OR not?’’
The Policeman while ignoring my question again, extended his hand to hand over the documents back to me and said ‘’Take your papers.’’
I took my documents and asked him again ‘’Are you going to inform them OR not?’’ But again, without answering my question he said ‘’You have to go to the Police Station’’. I asked again ‘’You are not going to inform them?’’. ‘’We have to go to the Police Station’’ He said again without answering my question.
Moments later a Patrol car with two Policemen arrived and without listening to me at all told me to collect my stuff and go with them to the Police Station. At Syntagma Police Station without asking me anything about my documents OR whatsoever, they held me custody for 3 to 4 hours before let go of me. By them the Embassy was already closed, and I couldn’t get back there again.
This is one of their many ways of playing with our lives. Because obviously not only they could have checked my identification right there while still in front of the Australian Embassy, but even in the Police Station it shouldn’t have taken them too long.
As I couldn’t go back to the Australian Embassy, I went straight back again to the yard of the National Library of Greece, which thus far is the only place I could use electricity for charging my electronic devices and use the internet to post updates on social media accounts on this ongoing tyranny and oppression.
There are fates worse than death. Not only they have handed me one, but in fact, kept me in such a horrific state of nightmare and despair every day for the past 7 hellish years. They took away every shred of my dignity and honor and now are coming after my life.
I fear for my life, my safety and well-being.
Please spread the word and show that you care and therefore not indifferent to what is happening here. So that the UNHCR can come to its senses and take urgent action for resolving my dire situation by referring my case for Resettlement in another country (i.e. Canada, U.S. OR Australia) and also to seek formal apology and compensation for all the physical, spiritual and material losses they have so ruthlessly and unjustly inflicted upon my life in Greece for the past 7 hellish years.
Nothing like this should happen to anyone, anywhere and no one should be put through a situation like this.
This is a dire emergency. Please do not be indifferent and ignorant to what is happening here and take action now.
I look forward to seeing your solidarity and support in whatever ways possible. Thank you
Yours Respectfully;
