On Friday, June 11th, 2021, I had been at the entrance of the Greek Section of Amnesty International from 12:00 PM to 18:00 PM and had requested to speak with a representative from the Organization. I also placed a few phone calls to their office, but they did not answer. Which is why, I left them a voicemail, however, because the phone was giving instructions in the Greek language, I am still not sure whether they received and heard my message OR not.
Although, I also rang the doorbell on three occasions, but nobody answered there either.
After being here for a few hours, an old man who was coming out of the building and heading home, stopped by, looked up my banner and initiated a brief conversation with me. ‘’Speak with Amnesty’’ he told me. I asked whether he was from Amnesty himself? He said, he was a member. Then I told him that I have in fact been trying for years, to speak with Amnesty International. He replies back and said wait here; somebody will see and respond.
I found it strange though that he was expecting someone else from the Amnesty to attend to the issue, when in fact he said himself that he was actually a member of the organization. But regardless, even though I stayed there until 18:00 PM, but nobody cared enough to attend to the matter.
Later it started to rain which wasn’t good news for me, because after the destruction of my fifth shelter at the doorsteps of UNHCR in Athens, I have practically been without shelter. This meant same as the night before; I wouldn't be able to find anywhere to seek shelter at and therefore wouldn't be able to sleep.
My worries about getting a shelter for the night aside, while it was still raining, one of the tenants of the building who was getting inside the building, told me to leave, "I am crazy, I will kill you’’ he told me. ‘’Nobody from Amnesty is coming. I will call the Police. I don’t want you to come here again" He continued. He also said a few other things in Greek which I didn’t understand. The guy unaware, all his threats got captured on the camera.
Later another tenant who saw my banner in front of Amnesty’s office while getting inside the building, pointing her finger at my Banner saying ‘’This is disturbing now’’ Confused at her statement! I told her ‘’This is not disturbing, meaning not for her, it is disturbing for me’’ I told her and continued ‘’This country is killing people, you feel being disturbed by my banner, but not feeling disturbed by your countries doing’’ She replies and says ‘’Oh! In a mocking way’’, I replied back and said ‘’Oh! Oh! Yes! You don’t see the message on the Banner’’ but she interrupts me and says ‘’Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!’’ and I continued ‘’You have a little trouble passing from here, you see that’’ and as she gets in by then and said some other things in Greek that I didn’t get.
Despite the rain and all the threats, I received, I still stayed there at the entrance of the Amnesty’s office till 18:00 PM. I fact, until my phone almost died and not just for safety reasons, but also in order to go find electricity and the internet where I could charge my phone and edit and publish the videos of my presence at the entrance of the Amnesty International. The place I went to get help, but instead I got death threats.
This is basically what happens to the helpless people, the refugees, people like myself, when they reach out to the so-called Human Rights Organizations, but rather than getting the help they need, they would be left out behind the closed doors to deal with intimidations and death threats of random people OR perhaps not so random after all.
Hence, for someone in my situation and in a place like this, justice will never be served. This is one of the very reasons why I fear for my life, my safety and well-being in this country.
Nothing like this should happen to anyone, anywhere and no one should be put through a situation like this.
This is a dire emergency. Please do not be indifferent and ignorant to what is happening here and take action now.
I look forward to seeing your solidarity and support in whatever ways possible. Thank you
Yours Respectfully;
