JUNETEENTH PAGEANT LINEAGE PARTICIPANTS ONLY

The Issue

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in the United States. It is a day of historical significance and cultural importance for the descendants of those who suffered and persevered through chattel slavery in America. However, the inclusion of participants who do not share this specific lineage undermines the purpose of these pageants and dilutes the opportunities meant for Black Americans. We, the undersigned, call for the exclusion of non-lineage participants from Juneteenth pageants to ensure that these events honor and benefit American Descendants of Chattel Slavery. Our goal is to preserve the cultural integrity of Juneteenth and prevent the economic marginalization of our ethnic group. Pageants such as Miss Jamaica World and Miss Ghana UK have clear eligibility criteria that prioritize participants of specific national or ethnic lineage. These policies underscore the importance of heritage and lineage in preserving cultural identity. It is inequitable for these communities to exclude Black Americans from their pageants while participating in ours. Scholarships, monetary awards, and opportunities provided through Juneteenth pageants are designed to support the Foundational Black American communities. Including non-lineage participants redirects these vital resources away from those who have a direct ancestral connection to the historical experiences commemorated by Juneteenth, furthering the economic disenfranchisement of our community. Juneteenth is a celebration rooted in the history and experiences of ADOS. Allowing non-lineage participants to take part in Juneteenth pageants erodes the cultural specificity and significance of this important event, and it HAS. The inclusion of non-lineage participants in Juneteenth pageants contributes to the economic castration of Black Americans by diverting financial support and opportunities meant to uplift our community. This practice undermines efforts to achieve economic parity and cultural recognition for descendants of chattel slavery in America. There has also been a common theme of non-lineage based participants having no prior knowledge of the significance and history of Juneteenth which adds insult to injury, and highlights the clear conflict of interest as some of them are the descendants of the people who were apart of the causation of our subjugation into American chattel slavery. We urge all Juneteenth pageant organizers to adopt lineage-based eligibility criteria that exclusively allows participation from American Descendants of Chattel Slavery. This measure is necessary to ensure that the benefits of these pageants rightfully go to those for whom Juneteenth holds the deepest historical and cultural significance. By doing so, we honor the legacy of our ancestors and provide meaningful support to our community. Please sign this petition to support the boycott of non-lineage participants in Juneteenth pageants and uphold the integrity and purpose of this important cultural celebration.
