Cyclist safety seems essentially non-existent on the highways, and streets, of San Antonio and surrounding areas. It was reported recently in October 29, 2012, by KENS Channel 5 San Antonio, that of all cyclist fatalities, involving cars, since 2009 half of those have occured in SATX in 2012!!!

Even a public employee working with the MPO agrees that it is not safe. In the same report by KENS 5 on October 26, they report and quote the following:

"Is it totally safe to ride a bicycle anywhere, anytime in San Antonio? Of course not," said Scott Ericksen, public involvement coordinator for the MPO, "Is it getting better? Yes it is." 

A change must be made so that cyclists feel safer on their own roads. Drivers that hit cyclists are not even cited; even in cases where the cyclists are injured or hospitalized. As citizens, the cyclists in the community deserve safety on the highways! Non-cyclists need to understand that they are our streets, roads, and highways also!
