Petition updateSTOMP: Save Trees Over More Pavement. Stop the Indiscriminate Removal of Trees Lining County Roads in Nassau (Including S. Oyster Bay Road)STOMP Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) Request Update

OPERATION STOMPSyosset, NY, United States
Dec 5, 2014
Operation STOMP, after e-mailing Legislators and County Officials on September 29 2014 for basic records regarding this project and not receiving a response, was forced to put in a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request on October 2, 2014. FOIL requests allow for public records to be furnished for review. STOMP's FOIL request asked for records relating to an arborist or landscape architect consulted or hired, funding sources for this project, and tree removal and replanting details, amongst other things. Records that a county engineer went on record alluding to on November 17 at the last Legislative Meeting. You can watch the legislative meeting in its entirety here: http://nassaucountyny.iqm2.com/Citizens/Media.aspx by scrolling down to 11-17-2014.
It is now December 4, 2014. Not a single record has been furnished beyond the 3 contracts and design/specs of the roadway. If these records truly exist, why not just furnish them upon request? We want everyone to be clear that the Department of Public Works has been ignoring us as of 2 weeks ago, in essence, failing to comply with FOIL. Transparency as expected, has sorely been lacking on this entire roadwork endeavor.
What you can do:
STOMP encourages you to call/e-mail your elected representatives and let them know they are not above the law and you expect nothing less than total compliance with FOIL. Let them know you care about the trees lining ALL County roads including their glare-protecting shade, barrier from traffic noise, neighborhood aesthetics, increase in property value and beneficial effect on the environment and public health. Tell them you believe in evidence-based, ADA compliant, viable alternatives to wide-scale destruction of our neighborhoods (see our Facebook page for articles, links and examples). Let them know DWARF trees DO NOT replace a 30-60’ generation’s grown tree canopy and pavers do not replace grass. Lastly, remind them that you vote!
