Save the Chutias of Assam, their Language and their Culture. Grant them ST status

Save the Chutias of Assam, their Language and their Culture. Grant them ST status
The Issue
The Chutia tribe is one of the indigenous tribal groups of Assam, who are in a danger of losing their identity today.
1. Common use of the term "Chutia/Chutiya" as a slang has compelled a major part of the tribe to change their surname as well as their caste/tribe. There have been reported cases where Chutias have converted to other castes in Sadiya, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Cachar, Nagaon, Sonitpur and even lower Assam.
2. The Chutia language is today on the verge of extinction as there are only about 10,000 speakers left, which is decreasing day by day.
3. The culture and religious customs of the Chutia tribe are also at a risk as a large part of the population has shifted to mainstream Hinduism and Assamese culture.
So, unless the tribe is granted ST status, there is very little hope of recovering this heritage.
