The adult health and social care system in the UK is fundamentally flawed. Inadequate training and insufficient understanding of crucial procedures by care staff are stark evidence of this. Many carers are required to pass English exams online, which do not thoroughly evaluate their comprehension or communication skills. Consequently, miscommunications in care plans and medication handling arise, endangering the lives of the vulnerable people they are supposed to protect.

Furthermore, many family members feel voiceless when raising concerns about their loved ones’ care. This lack of accountability and communication with families not only erodes trust in the system but also overlooks the importance of familial insights in understanding the specific needs and preferences of those receiving care.

To rectify these deep-seated issues, we urgently need a statutory change in how carers are recruited and trained. This should include mandatory in-person English proficiency exams to ensure accurate understanding and communication. All new caregivers must go through comprehensive training programs that emphasize the importance of clear communication and precision in handling care plans and medications.

Additionally, we propose the establishment of an independent body that will advocate for the rights of family members, ensuring they have a meaningful say in the care of their loved ones. This body could implement an official platform for complaints and feedback, which can guide improvements and identify recurring issues in care.
