You have a future. With hydraulic fracturing; asthma, earthquakes, premature babies, and birth defects could be a part of that future. Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is a method of oil and gas extraction. A long metal pipe is drilled into the ground to a level that contains oil and natural gas. Fracking fluid, a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals, is then injected horizontally at a high velocity in order to fracture rock that holds previously inaccessible oil and natural gas. The mixture that now contains oil is pumped back up to the surface to later be treated, in order to separate the oils and gases.

The liquid that is pumped into the ground to break the rock and also the wastewater from the process can cause earthquakes when these liquids are pumped into the earth. Stopping or reducing hydraulic fracturing could effectively lower the rate of hydraulic fracturing related earthquakes.

The emissions from the process of hydraulic fracturing include; hazardous wastewater and even harmful gases. The wastewater can contaminate drinking water wells in surrounding areas. There is a correlation between the harmful chemicals that leak into the wastewater and premature babies and even some birth defects. It is also found that children living in close radius to hydraulic fracturing sites are significantly more likely to have asthma. Cheap energy is good for the present, but endangering the health and well-being of you and your children is not worth these risks.
