154,300 Australian identities were stolen, 1.4m cards defrauded and 700,000 Aussies scammed last financial year, according to data released this week by the ABS.
Card fraud, scams, ID theft are all booming industries - up 22% over 5 years.
The official ABS personal fraud victimisation rate is now 11%. That means 11% of the total number of Australians aged over 15 were defrauded, scammed or had their identities stolen last year. That is 2.2 million adult Australians - in one year. That's up from 8.5% in 2014-15.
Is there anyone left who hasn't been scammed or had their ID stolen? If two million Australians have been scammed in one year, surely there are only very few people who haven't been exposed to rampant online crime?
Cash is the currency of hard working, honest, decent Australians. Scammers and fraudsters love the online digital economy.
But institutions love to tell us the opposite - with no facts. They love to imply that cash is preferred by criminals. The real criminals are online and apparently they are having a field day.
Ordinary people are at the checkout being told that cash is no longer welcome here. It's time to say no. NO to the Cashless Society. In 2022 we are talking to government, contacting regulators and politicians, lobbying banks and institutions and standing up for rights to use and access cash.
