Hi Cash Lovers,
"Long held assumptions about the cash-based nature of the criminal world need to be challenged..."
Don't let anyone tell you going cashless is about cracking down on crime. The institutions and companies that want us to go cashless want transaction fees and/or transaction information that can be sold or used for marketing.
A common belief is that criminals, drug dealers and money launderers prefer cash. There's new evidence to suggest that is no longer true.
Recent research reveals how criminals have successfully migrated online to digital payments, with little or no fear of detection.
We Fight Fraud, a think tank in the UK has outlined how, since COVID-19, a lot of crime has gone cashless. Digital and online money transfers have largely replaced cash handed over in bags or with tricky handshakes, according to the " #CRIME: HOW COVID-19 FORCED CRIMINAL COMMERCE INTO THE DIGITAL BANKING AGE" research paper.
"As the illicit economy grows in a time when the majority of society is socially distancing, long held assumptions about the cash-based nature of the criminal world need to be challenged." reads the report.
"We found the preferred option for criminals is now bank transfers, while some are also using PayPal or premium rate telephone numbers to send funds," wrote Dr Nicola Harding, WFF Advisor.
"There was an assumption that the decline of cash would make life more difficult for criminals, said Tony Sales, Fraud Subject Matter Expert.
"Our findings show the reverse is true."
What is true is that ordinary people want to have a choice about how they pay for legal goods and services. Cash makes budgeting easier, is reliable and surcharge-free.
Going cashless does not stop crime but it does hurt many people who trust and rely on cash.
Please help us stop the myths and fake news about cash. Cash is safe, reliable, private and surcharge-free. People who love cash are not criminals, we are average Aussies who want to have choice about how we pay.
